Water Desalination and Selective Polishing
UK IDEA’s suite of water treatment technologies includes (1) hybridization of membrane and electrochemical-based technology for demineralization and removal of EPA targeted metals from wastewater streams produced in energy production and conversion process via the development of a zeolite-based membrane and in-situ solid sorbent generation through iron electrodes, (2) electrochemical polishing of wastewater, targeting the removal low concentration impurity (<10,000 ppm TDS) using low applied voltages in a capacitive or pseudo-capacitive environment (3) selective removal metal contamination using faradaic processes, and (4) dewatering of ultra-high salinity, beyond-RO-capability (>100,000 ppm TDS) streams using ceramic membrane via preferential water transport under mild temperature and pressure conditions. Research and development efforts focus on material synthesis, development, and selection, optimized and targeted operational modes, and device-level and system-level design configurations for energy and cost-effectiveness.
