Global experts convene in Lexington for the 2024 International Conference on Energy and Environment

The International Conference on Energy and Environment (ICEE), now in its third year, took place from July 15 to 19, 2024, at the Lexington Griffin Gate Marriott Resort and Spa in Lexington, Kentucky. This year’s conference brought together roughly 140 leading experts, scholars and entrepreneurs in the fields of energy and environment from the U.S., China, Japan, Canada and South Korea.

Organized by a coalition of institutions including the UK Pigman College of Engineering Institute for Decarbonization and Energy Advancement (IDEA), Southeast University, Zhejiang University, China University of Mining and Technology and Jiangsu Energy Research Society, the conference showcased the latest research findings in the field of energy and environment, promoted interdisciplinary exchange, and explored cutting-edge topics such as carbon capture and utilization, biomass and solid waste, hydrogen energy, and storage.

The 2024 conference, chaired by Kunlei Liu, professor of mechanical engineering and director of IDEA, alongside peers Rui Xiao and Mengxiang Fang, focused on four major topics: CO2 Capture and Emission, CO2 Utilization/Conversion, Biomass and Solid Waste Utilization, and Hydrogen and Energy Storage. Attendees engaged in plenary speeches, panel discussions, invited talks and professional networking.

The event was opened with a welcome speech from Sarah Forbes, Director for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Carbon Management Technologies. Forbes was followed by eight other prominent plenary speakers, Prominent figures in the field addressed attendees, including Ron Munson from the National Energy Technology Laboratory and Xian Zhang from the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, who gave the opening day plenary speeches. Each speaker provided a valuable overview of current advancements and future directions in energy and environmental technology.

ICEE was designed to maximize participation, with 85 invited talks and five panel discussions. Panel discussion topics were CCUS R&D, Alternative Energy – Biomass & Solid Waste, Commercial Scale Flexible Operation, Cross-Border Low Carbon Energy and Industrial Applications. These talks and panel discussions provided a forum for exchanging ideas and discussing future challenges and opportunities.

The ultimate goal for ICEE organizers was to establish a global academic exchange platform that will stimulate new ideas and perspectives through further discussions and collaborations, contributing to the new developments in energy and sustainability.
